Things to do in the Rain in Languedoc
Sometimes it rains. Even here! And because it is so rare here, we need it desperately for our beautiful nature. But don’t panic! A few drops of rain shouldn’t stop you enjoying your stay. We have you covered with some ideas of places to visit and things to do that you might not have normally planned. Here are 10 things to do in the rain in Languedoc:
1. Museums
Explore the ancient Roman history of Narbonne at Narbo Via, an archaeological museum showcasing artifacts and exhibits related to the Roman settlement of the city. Discover fascinating insights into daily life, trade, and architecture during the Roman era.
Or delve into the prehistoric world at the Paleontology Museum of Cruzy, where you’ll find fossils, dinosaur skeletons, and exhibits detailing the region’s rich paleontological heritage. You can also now see the skeletal remains of a dinosaur recently unearthed in the hills next to Montouliers!
2. Art Galleries
Immerse yourself in the world of “modest art” at MIAM in Sète, a museum dedicated to showcasing unconventional and eclectic collections of street art, graffiti, found objects, and other avant-garde artworks that challenge traditional ideas of art.
Explore the unique Art en Cave gallery in Saint-Chinian, where contemporary artworks are exhibited in the wine cellar. A magnificent fresco comes to life on one of the cellar’s vats, and an extract of this work is then found on the bottle label. You can enjoy a visit to the cellar and a tasting all year round.
3. Wine Tasting
Experience the flavors of the region with a wine tasting at one of the many wineries in the area. Learn about the winemaking process, terroir, and grape varieties while savoring the distinct aromas and flavors of Languedoc wines.
We recommend Domaine Lou Colombier, our charming village winery, where you can sample a selection of fine wines produced on-site, including robust reds, crisp whites, and delicate rosés. Or the Château de Paraza, where you can tour the stunning vaulted cellar, followed by a wine-tasting.
4. Historic Sites
Rainy days provide the perfect opportunity to explore the region’s historic sites without the crowds.
Visit the medieval fortress of Carcassonne, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Or explore the medieval ruins of Fontcaude Abbey in Cazedarnes, a tranquil site nestled in the scenic countryside. Wander through the ancient cloisters, chapels and gardens, and soak in the serene atmosphere while reflecting on centuries of history and spirituality
5. Indoor Markets
Discover the vibrant flavours and aromas of local produce at indoor markets such as award-winning Les Halles de Narbonne or Les Halles Castellane in Montpellier.
Browse stalls offering fresh fruits, vegetables, meats, cheeses, and artisanal products, and mingle with locals as you immerse yourself in the bustling market atmosphere. They are also great places to head for lunch or a coffee whilst watching the world go by!
6. Thermal Spas
Indulge in a day of relaxation and rejuvenation at one of the region’s thermal spas.
Options include Les Bains de Balaruc-les-Bains, renowned for its therapeutic waters and wellness treatments, and Les Thermes de Lamalou-les-Bains, offering a range of spa services amidst scenic surroundings.
7. Underground Caves
Embark on an underground adventure with cave visits to attractions like the Grotte de Clamouse or the Grotte de Limousis. Explore stunning rock formations, underground rivers and magnificent stalactites and stalagmites adorning the awe-inspiring caverns, and marvel at the natural wonders hidden beneath the surface of the earth.
8. Local Cuisine
Why not go for a long leisurely lunch?! You could try Auberge de la Croisade near Cruzy for a delicious meal on the banks of the Canal du Midi – it never disappoints!
Or savour traditional Languedoc cuisine with a contemporary twist at La Maison de Petit Pierre, a cosy restaurant tucked away in the heart of Béziers. From hearty cassoulet to delicate seafood dishes, each plate is a celebration of local flavours.
9. Indoor Sports and Activities
Take a trip to the Piscine du Narbonne, a modern indoor swimming pool complex offering lanes for swimming, as well as leisure pools and water slides for family fun. Or bounce, flip, and jump to your heart’s content at the Trampoline Parc in Béziers, an indoor trampoline park featuring a variety of interconnected trampolines, foam pits, and obstacle courses for all ages.
10. Staying in at La Calade
We’ve saved the best until last with this option! Why not just hang out at La Calade? Here, you’ll find plenty to keep you entertained, from a games room stocked with babyfoot, darts, Jenga, and loads of board games.
Or if relaxation is on your mind, we can arrange for a massage session with Beleza Massage. Alternatively, indulge in a private wine tasting experience featuring the exquisite wines of Lou Colombier, or unleash your creativity with apéro and art classes led by Inspire Gallery.
With so many options, you can fully embrace your time in the Hérault and Aude regions, even when the rain clouds roll in. Whether you’re passionate about history, culture, gastronomy or simply seeking relaxation, there’s something for everyone in this picturesque region of France.
