La r\u00e9gion a prosp\u00e9r\u00e9 \u00e0 l’\u00e9poque romaine, ses principales villes se d\u00e9veloppant le long de la Via Domitia entre l’Italie et l’Espagne : Montpellier, N\u00eemes, B\u00e9ziers et Narbonne.<\/p>\n
Au d\u00e9but du Moyen \u00c2ge, ce qui \u00e9tait connu sous le nom de “Languedoc” (alors une grande partie du sud de la France) \u00e9tait une nation ind\u00e9pendante, abritant une civilisation sophistiqu\u00e9e et tol\u00e9rante, inspir\u00e9e par la culture mauresque d’Al-Andaluz dans l’Espagne voisine. C’\u00e9tait l’\u00e9poque des troubadours, qui firent de la langue locale, l’occitan, la premi\u00e8re langue litt\u00e9raire la\u00efque d’Europe \u2013 \u00e0 tel point que m\u00eame Dante caressa l’id\u00e9e de l’utiliser pour La Divine Com\u00e9die.<\/p>\n
D\u00e9sillusionn\u00e9s par la corruption de l’\u00c9glise m\u00e9di\u00e9vale, de nombreux habitants du Languedoc adoptent le catharisme : une vision dualiste du christianisme, avec des id\u00e9es \u00e9tonnamment modernes ; les femmes, par exemple, ont des droits \u00e9gaux. En 1209, le pape d\u00e9clencha contre eux une guerre sainte connue sous le nom de croisade des Albigeois qui mit fin brutalement \u00e0 l’\u00e9clat pr\u00e9coce du Languedoc \u2013 ainsi qu’\u00e0 son ind\u00e9pendance.<\/p>\n

Des ch\u00e2teaux pour la plupart, \u00e0 commencer par celui de Carcassonne. Cette citadelle imprenable \u00e9tait le si\u00e8ge du vicomte Raymond-Roger Trencavel, qui offrit la protection des Cathares contre les crois\u00e9s – jusqu’\u00e0 ce que Simon de Montfort, leur capitaine impitoyablement efficace, dupe le jeune vicomte pour qu’il quitte son fief imprenable, puis l’emprisonna et l’empoisonna pour s’emparer son titre et ses terres.<\/p>\n
Les murailles et les tours \u00e0 chapeau de sorci\u00e8re de la Cit\u00e9 de Carcassonne, restaur\u00e9es au XIXe si\u00e8cle, forment un majestueux diad\u00e8me de conte de f\u00e9es sur la vall\u00e9e de l’Aude, aujourd’hui assi\u00e9g\u00e9e par plus d’un million de visiteurs par an. Allez-y t\u00f4t le matin ou hors saison si vous le pouvez. Visitez le Ch\u00e2teau-Comtal et faites le tour des remparts. M\u00eame apr\u00e8s la prise et les ex\u00e9cutions massives de Monts\u00e9gur en 1244, quelques cathares ont r\u00e9sist\u00e9. Au sud de Carcassonne, dans la nature sauvage des Corbi\u00e8res, ils se sont r\u00e9fugi\u00e9s dans des ch\u00e2teaux vacillant sur des pinacles vertigineux tomb\u00e9s depuis dans de splendides ruines. Il y en a plusieurs \u00e0 visiter : les plus spectaculaires sont Qu\u00e9ribus et Peyrepetuse.<\/p>\n

Tout d’abord, une excellente collection d’art au Mus\u00e9e Fabre. Ensuite, l’aquarium Mare Nostrum enti\u00e8rement du XXIe si\u00e8cle. Troisi\u00e8mement, la Serre Amazonienne remplie de flore et de faune. Si vous pouvez vous permettre de vous d\u00e9penser, allez manger au l\u00e9gendaire Le Jardin des Sens, si\u00e8ge des chefs jumeaux Jacques et Laurent Pourcel.<\/p>\n
N\u00eemes, la “Rome de France”, est un joyau, avec un temple romain parfaitement conserv\u00e9, la Maison Carr\u00e9e et les Ar\u00e8nes – un amphith\u00e9\u00e2tre romain en meilleur \u00e9tat que le Colis\u00e9e. L’eau de la ville \u00e9tait achemin\u00e9e par pas moins d’un chef-d’\u0153uvre de l’ing\u00e9nierie antique, le Pont du Gard, \u00e0 16 km au nord-est de la ville.<\/p>\n

Plus \u00e0 l’ouest, Narbonne \u00e9tait la ville la plus importante du Languedoc au Moyen \u00c2ge ; sa pi\u00e8ce ma\u00eetresse est la cath\u00e9drale gothique et un palais \u00e9piscopal fortifi\u00e9. Ce dernier abrite aujourd’hui d’excellents mus\u00e9es d’art et d’arch\u00e9ologie.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Perpignan est effectivement la derni\u00e8re ville de France avant la fronti\u00e8re espagnole et a des influences des deux pays ; la gare a un monument au h\u00e9ros catalan local Salvador Dali, qui a d\u00e9crit la gare comme “le centre de l’univers”.<\/p>\n

Sommi\u00e8res, autrefois r\u00e9sidence de Lawrence Durrell, poss\u00e8de un pont romain et des charmes de boules paresseuses sous les platanes, tandis que P\u00e9zenas, autrefois capitale du Languedoc, regorge de beaux b\u00e2timents du XVIIe si\u00e8cle et de souvenirs de Moli\u00e8re, dont la troupe s’est produite ici.<\/p>\n
A l’ouest, S\u00e8te est un port de p\u00eache sillonn\u00e9 de canaux, qui abrite l’amusant Mus\u00e9e International des Arts Modestes et un calendrier bien rempli de festivals d’\u00e9t\u00e9. Parmi les plus populaires figurent les joutes nautiques, un sport unique au Languedoc. Ces affrontements, propuls\u00e9s par des rameurs plut\u00f4t que par des chevaux, ont \u00e9t\u00e9 invent\u00e9s par les Crois\u00e9s de LouisV CIX alors qu’ils tuaient le temps \u00e0 Aigues Mortes, un spectaculaire port fortifi\u00e9 maintenant \u00e9chou\u00e9 haut et sec en Petite Camargue.<\/p>\n

Parmi les nouvelles stations baln\u00e9aires, deux sont particuli\u00e8rement populaires : la d\u00e9sormais pittoresque et futuriste La Grande Motte pr\u00e8s de Montpellier ; et Le Cap d’Agde<\/a><\/span>, dont une partie est la plus grande station naturiste d’Europe. Il se trouve \u00e0 proximit\u00e9 de la vieille ville d’Agde. Les Pyr\u00e9n\u00e9es m\u00e9diterran\u00e9ennes sont un terrain de jeu hiver comme \u00e9t\u00e9, parfait pour la randonn\u00e9e, le kayak, le canyoning, la sp\u00e9l\u00e9ologie et l’escalade.<\/p>\n
Le d\u00e9partement de la Loz\u00e8re dans le nord du Languedoc englobe une grande partie du magnifique Parc National des C\u00e9vennes. Le parc englobe les 65 km des Gorges du Tarn et des merveilles karstiques impressionnantes, sculpt\u00e9es dans le calcaire : les Gorges de la Jonte, o\u00f9 les vautours ont \u00e9t\u00e9 r\u00e9introduits ; la Grotte de Dargilan, et un gouffre, l’Ab\u00eeme de Bramabiau. Si vous avez amen\u00e9 les enfants, ne manquez pas de grimper sur les installations artistiques de la r\u00e9ponse de la Loz\u00e8re \u00e0 Disneyland Paris, le Vallon du Villaret \u00e0 Bagnols les Bains.<\/p>\n
Essayez le Canal du Midi<\/a><\/span>, qui relie la M\u00e9diterran\u00e9e \u00e0 Toulouse (puis l’Atlantique). Les 240 km du canal ont \u00e9t\u00e9 achev\u00e9s en 15 ans (1666-81) par 12 000 ouvriers, avec 64 \u00e9cluses. Plus grande r\u00e9gion viticole du monde, le Languedoc-Roussillon remplit quelque deux milliards de bouteilles par an. Le sol rocheux, les collines escarp\u00e9es et le climat sec et ensoleill\u00e9 offrent des conditions id\u00e9ales pour les vignobles, un fait d’abord appr\u00e9ci\u00e9 par les anciens Grecs et Romains. C’est aussi la patrie du plus ancien mousseux du monde, la Blanquette de Limoux (invent\u00e9e au XVIe si\u00e8cle) et d’une gamme de vins naturellement doux comme le Banyuls et le Rivesaltes.<\/p>\n
Le vin bon march\u00e9 du Languedoc-Roussillon a \u00e9tanch\u00e9 la soif des masses pendant la r\u00e9volution industrielle, mais au cours des derni\u00e8res d\u00e9cennies, ses vignerons ont am\u00e9lior\u00e9 la qualit\u00e9. Aujourd’hui, c’est la r\u00e9gion viticole la plus excitante du monde, non seulement pour les 24 vins AOC, mais aussi pour sa myriade de vins de pays, o\u00f9 des r\u00e8gles plus souples permettent plus d’exp\u00e9rimentation. Un excellent lieu pour les d\u00e9couvrir est la Vin\u00e9cole (00 33 4 4 68 31 64 14) pr\u00e8s de Limoux, dirig\u00e9e par le Master of Wine anglais Matthew Stubbs, qui propose des cours allant de la d\u00e9gustation rapide aux cours pour professionnels.<\/p>\n

Languedoc-Roussillon is the part of the French Mediterranean with a charm all of its own. One of its great assets is the amount of exciting geography in a relatively small area. From the wetlands of the Petite Camargue and its white horses and black bulls to the rugged jumble of the C\u00f4te Vermeille by the Spanish border. Endless sandy beaches and flamingo-filled lagoons fill the space in between. Inland, vines, parasol pines and Mediterranean scrub dominate a dramatic hinterland, characterised by highlands of causses and garrigue, chestnut and oak forests, wild gorges and mountains \u2013 the C\u00e9vennes, Montagne Noire and the Pyrenees \u2013 all only an hour's drive from the coast.![\"cevennes](\"https:\/\/lacalade.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/cevennes.png\")

A Brief History<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
The region thrived in Roman times, its main cities growing along the Italy-to-Spain Via Domitia: Montpellier, N\u00eemes, B\u00e9ziers and Narbonne. By the early Middle Ages, what was known as \"Languedoc\" (then much of southern France) was an independent nation, home to a sophisticated, tolerant civilisation, inspired by the Moorish culture of Al-Andaluz in nearby Spain. It was the time of the troubadours, who made the local language, Occitan the first secular literary language in Europe \u2013 so much as that even Dante toyed with the idea using it for The Divine Comedy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Disillusioned with the corruption of the medieval Church, many inhabitants of Languedoc adopted Catharism: a dualist take on Christianity, with some surprisingly modern ideas; women, for instance, had equal rights. In 1209, the Pope called a holy war known as the Albigensian Crusade against them that put an abrupt end to Languedoc's precocious brilliance \u2013 as well as its independence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Anything left of the Cathars?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
Castles mostly, starting with the one in Carcassonne. This impregnable citadel was the seat of the Viscount Raymond-Roger Trencavel, who offered the Cathars protection from the Crusaders \u2013 until Simon de Montfort, their ruthlessly efficient captain, tricked the young viscount into leaving his impregnable stronghold, then imprisoned and poisoned him to seize his title and lands.![\"carcassonne](\"https:\/\/lacalade.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/blog-carcassonne.png\")
<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The walls and witch-hatted towers of the Cit\u00e9 of Carcassonne, restored in the 19th century, form a majestic fairy tale tiara over the Aude valley, today besieged by over a million visitors a year. Go early in the morning or out of season if you can. Visit the Ch\u00e2teau-Comtal and take a tour of the ramparts. Even after the capture and mass executions at Monts\u00e9gur in 1244, a few Cathars held out. South of Carcassonne, in the wilds of the Corbi\u00e8res, they took refuge in castles teetering on vertiginous pinnacles that have since fallen into splendid ruins. There are several to visit: the most spectacular are Qu\u00e9ribus and Peyrepetuse.![\"Peyrepetuse\"](\"https:\/\/lacalade.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/Peyrepetuse.png\")
<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Rumour has it that a few Cathars slipped away to Rennes-le-Ch\u00e2teau and hid a secret treasure, which was later uncovered by the village priest, the Abb\u00e9 Sauni\u00e8re. It's one theory behind the mystery that captivated Holy Blood, Holy Grail fans; check it out at the Domaine de l'Abb\u00e9 Sauni\u00e8re.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
City lights?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
Montpellier is the fastest-growing city in France. Home to a major university and a handsome 18th-century centre, Montpellier boasts the region's best nightlife, shopping, and some great attractions. First, an excellent art collection in the Mus\u00e9e Fabre. Next, the wholly 21st-century Mare Nostrum Aquarium. Third, the flora- and fauna-filled Serre Amazonienne. If you can afford to splash out, eat at the fabled Le Jardin des Sens, headquarters of twin master chefs Jacques and Laurent Pourcel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
N\u00eemes, the \"Rome of France\", is a gem, with a perfectly preserved Roman temple, the Maison Carr\u00e9e and the Ar\u00e8nes \u2013 a Roman amphitheatre in better nick than the Colosseum. The city's water was delivered by no less than a masterpiece of ancient engineering, the Pont du Gard, 16km north-east of town.![\"nimes\"](\"https:\/\/lacalade.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/nimes.png\")
<\/p>\n\n\n\n
To the west, B\u00e9ziers is the quintessential, non-twee Languedoc city. It makes a striking sight, piled under a huge Gothic cathedral that was built after the original burned in the infamous massacre of the Cathars (and everyone else) when the Papal legate allegedly ordered the Albigensian Crusaders: \"Kill them all; God will know His own.\"<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Further west, Narbonne was Languedoc's most important town into the Middle Ages; its centrepiece is the Gothic Cathedral and a fortified Episcopal Palace. The latter now houses excellent art and archaeology museums.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Perpignan is effectively the last city in France before the Spanish border, and has influences from both countries; the railway station has a monument to local Catalan hero Salvador Dali, who described la gare as \"the centre of the universe\".<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Something less busy?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
Start with classy little Uz\u00e8s, with its Pisa-style belltower, the Tour Fenestrelle, and unique ducal castle: Le Duch\u00e9 in the centre of town. Sommi\u00e8res, once residence of Lawrence Durrell, has a Roman bridge and lazy-boules-under-the-plane trees charms, while P\u00e9zenas, once capital of Languedoc, is full of handsome 17th-century buildings and memories of Moli\u00e8re, whose troupe performed here.![\"Uzes\"](\"https:\/\/lacalade.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/uzes.png\")
<\/p>\n\n\n\n
To the west, S\u00e8te is a fishing port laced with canals, home to the amusing Mus\u00e9e International des Arts Modestes and to a full calendar of summer festivals. Among the most popular are the joutes nautiques (nautical jousts), a sport unique to Languedoc. These clashes, propelled by rowers instead of horses, were invented by LouisV CIX's Crusaders while killing time at Aigues Mortes, a spectacular walled port now stranded high and dry in the Petite Camargue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
And the beaches?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
In the 1960s, Paris made Languedoc-Roussillon the Florida of France, to detour French holidaymakers (and their cash) from the Costa Brava. Of the new resorts, two are especially popular: the now-quaint, futuristic La Grande Motte near Montpellier; and Le Cap d'Agde, part of which is the biggest naturist resort in Europe. It lies near the old town of Agde. This community is known as Languedoc's \"Black Pearl\" for its basalt architecture; it also has gorgeous ancient Greek bronzes in the Mus\u00e9e de l'Eph\u00e8be, dedicated to underwater archaeology.![\"cap](\"https:\/\/lacalade.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/cap-dagde.png\")
<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In Roussillon, the white sandy beaches (and resorts of St-Cyprien-sur-Mer and Canet Plage) meet the beautiful C\u00f4te Vermeille, where the arty anchovy port of Collioure oozes charm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Can I work up a sweat?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
Oh yes. The Mediterranean Pyrenees are a winter and summer playground, perfect for trekking, kayaking, canyoning, caving, and rock climbing.
The d\u00e9partement of the Loz\u00e8re in northern Languedoc encompasses much of the beautiful Parc National des C\u00e9vennes. The park encompasses the 65km Gorges du Tarn and awe-inspiring karstic marvels, sculpted in the limestone: the Gorges de la Jonte, where vultures have been re-introduced; the Grotte de Dargilan, and an abyss, the Ab\u00eeme de Bramabiau.
If you've brought the children, don't miss clambering over the art installations at the Loz\u00e8re's answer to Disneyland Paris, the Vallon du Villaret in Bagnols les Bains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I'd rather just drift along<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
Try the Canal du Midi, which links the Mediterranean to Toulouse (then the Atlantic). The canal's 240km were completed in 15 years (1666-81) by 12,000 workers, who 64 locks. The railroads made it obsolete, but it is now among the region's prime attractions. You can extend the trip along the Canal du Rh\u00f4ne \u00e0 S\u00e8te, which meets the Rh\u00f4ne at Beaucaire.![\"Canal](\"https:\/\/lacalade.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/Seuil-de-Naurouze-1.png\")

And the wine?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
The world's biggest wine region, Languedoc-Roussillon fills some two billion bottles a year. The rocky soil, rugged hills and dry, sunny climate provide perfect conditions for vineyards, a fact first appreciated by the ancient Greeks and Romans. It's also the home of the world's oldest bubbly, Blanquette de Limoux (invented in the 16th century) and a range of naturally sweet wines such as Banyuls and Rivesaltes.<\/p>\n
Languedoc-Roussillon's plonk slaked the thirst of the masses during the Industrial Revolution, but in recent decades, its vignerons have made improvements in the quality. Today it's the world's most exciting wine region, not only for the 24 AOC wines but its myriad vins de pays, where laxer rules allow more experimentation. An excellent place to learn about them is the Vin\u00e9cole (00 33 4 4 68 31 64 14) near Limoux, run by English Master of Wine Matthew Stubbs, who offers courses from speed tasting to classes for professionals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Bon app\u00e9tit - Flavours of the region<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
Languedoc-Roussillon's markets overflow with excellent local ingredients: Bouzigues oysters, Collioure anchovies, olives, seafood, duck and foie gras, beef from the Camargue, truffles from Uz\u00e8s, fresh fruit (C\u00e9ret in Roussillon is the cherry capital of France), lamb from the Loz\u00e8re, charcuterie and goat cheeses from the C\u00e9vennes and much more.
The region wasn't traditionally known for its restaurants, although a new generation of savvy chefs are working hard to change that. Some of the best work at the Ambassade and Octopus, both in B\u00e9ziers; La Maison de la Loz\u00e8re in Montpellier, Gilles Goujon at Fontjoncouse, Le Parc Franck Putelat in Carcassonne and the Auberge Saint-Paul in Villefranche-de-Conflent.![\"Bouzigues](\"https:\/\/lacalade.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/Bouzigues-oysters.png\")

When to go<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
July and August are high season: the beaches are packed and Languedoc-Roussillon puts on a non-stop array of festivals and ferias. April to June and September to October have cooler temperatures, fewer crowds and lower prices, and are also the best times for walking. Montpellier stays lively all year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
And the best thing?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Montpellier est la ville la plus dynamique de France. Abritant une grande universit\u00e9 et un beau centre du XVIIIe si\u00e8cle, Montpellier poss\u00e8de la meilleure vie nocturne de la r\u00e9gion, des boutiques et de superbes attractions. Tout d’abord, une excellente collection d’art au Mus\u00e9e Fabre. Ensuite, l’aquarium Mare Nostrum enti\u00e8rement du XXIe si\u00e8cle. Troisi\u00e8mement, la Serre Amazonienne remplie de flore et de faune. N\u00eemes, la “Rome de France”, est un joyau, avec un temple romain parfaitement conserv\u00e9, la Maison Carr\u00e9e et les Ar\u00e8nes – un amphith\u00e9\u00e2tre romain en meilleur \u00e9tat que le Colis\u00e9e. L’eau de la ville \u00e9tait achemin\u00e9e par pas moins d’un chef-d’\u0153uvre de l’ing\u00e9nierie antique, le Pont du Gard, \u00e0 16 km au nord-est de la ville.<\/p>\n

A l’ouest, B\u00e9ziers est la vraie ville languedocienne par excellence. C’est un spectacle saisissant, empil\u00e9 sous une immense cath\u00e9drale gothique qui a \u00e9t\u00e9 construite apr\u00e8s que l’original a br\u00fbl\u00e9 lors du tristement c\u00e9l\u00e8bre massacre des Cathares (et de tous les autres) lorsque le l\u00e9gat papal aurait ordonn\u00e9 aux crois\u00e9s albigeois : \u00ab Tuez-les tous ; Dieu conna\u00eetra les siens.<\/p>\n
Plus \u00e0 l’ouest, Narbonne \u00e9tait la ville la plus importante du Languedoc au Moyen \u00c2ge ; sa pi\u00e8ce ma\u00eetresse est la cath\u00e9drale gothique et un palais \u00e9piscopal fortifi\u00e9. Ce dernier abrite aujourd’hui d’excellents mus\u00e9es d’art et d’arch\u00e9ologie.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Perpignan est effectivement la derni\u00e8re ville de France avant la fronti\u00e8re espagnole et a des influences des deux pays ; la gare a un monument au h\u00e9ros catalan local Salvador Dali, qui a d\u00e9crit la gare comme “le centre de l’univers”.<\/p>\n

Commencez par la petite Uz\u00e8s chic, avec son clocher de style Pise, la Tour Fenestrelle et son unique ch\u00e2teau ducal : Le Duch\u00e9 au centre de la ville. Sommi\u00e8res, autrefois r\u00e9sidence de Lawrence Durrell, poss\u00e8de un pont romain et des charmes de boules paresseuses sous les platanes, tandis que P\u00e9zenas, autrefois capitale du Languedoc, regorge de beaux b\u00e2timents du XVIIe si\u00e8cle et de souvenirs de Moli\u00e8re, dont la troupe s’est produite ici.<\/p>\n
A l’ouest, S\u00e8te est un port de p\u00eache sillonn\u00e9 de canaux, qui abrite l’amusant Mus\u00e9e International des Arts Modestes et un calendrier bien rempli de festivals d’\u00e9t\u00e9. Parmi les plus populaires figurent les joutes nautiques, un sport unique au Languedoc. Ces affrontements, propuls\u00e9s par des rameurs plut\u00f4t que par des chevaux, ont \u00e9t\u00e9 invent\u00e9s par les Crois\u00e9s de LouisV CIX alors qu’ils tuaient le temps \u00e0 Aigues Mortes, un spectaculaire port fortifi\u00e9 maintenant \u00e9chou\u00e9 haut et sec en Petite Camargue.<\/p>\n

Dans les ann\u00e9es 1960, Paris a fait du Languedoc-Roussillon la Floride de la France, pour d\u00e9tourner les vacanciers fran\u00e7ais (et leur argent) de la Costa Brava.<\/p>\n
Parmi les nouvelles stations baln\u00e9aires, deux sont particuli\u00e8rement populaires : la d\u00e9sormais pittoresque et futuriste La Grande Motte pr\u00e8s de Montpellier ; et Le Cap d’Agde<\/a><\/span>, dont une partie est la plus grande station naturiste d’Europe. Il se trouve \u00e0 proximit\u00e9 de la vieille ville d’Agde. Cette commune est connue sous le nom de \u00ab Perle noire \u00bb du Languedoc pour son architecture basaltique ; il poss\u00e8de \u00e9galement de magnifiques bronzes grecs anciens au Mus\u00e9e de l’Eph\u00e8be, d\u00e9di\u00e9 \u00e0 l’arch\u00e9ologie sous-marine.<\/p>\nEn Roussillon, les plages de sable blanc (et les stations baln\u00e9aires de St-Cyprien-sur-Mer et Canet Plage) rencontrent la belle C\u00f4te Vermeille, o\u00f9 le port arty d’anchois de Collioure d\u00e9borde de charme.<\/p>\n

Les Pyr\u00e9n\u00e9es m\u00e9diterran\u00e9ennes sont un terrain de jeu hiver comme \u00e9t\u00e9, parfait pour la randonn\u00e9e, le kayak, le canyoning, la sp\u00e9l\u00e9ologie et l’escalade.<\/p>\n
Le d\u00e9partement de la Loz\u00e8re dans le nord du Languedoc englobe une grande partie du magnifique Parc National des C\u00e9vennes. Le parc englobe les 65 km des Gorges du Tarn et des merveilles karstiques impressionnantes, sculpt\u00e9es dans le calcaire : les Gorges de la Jonte, o\u00f9 les vautours ont \u00e9t\u00e9 r\u00e9introduits ; la Grotte de Dargilan, et un gouffre, l’Ab\u00eeme de Bramabiau. Si vous avez amen\u00e9 les enfants, ne manquez pas de grimper sur les installations artistiques de la r\u00e9ponse de la Loz\u00e8re \u00e0 Disneyland Paris, le Vallon du Villaret \u00e0 Bagnols les Bains.<\/p>\n
Essayez le Canal du Midi<\/a><\/span>, qui relie la M\u00e9diterran\u00e9e \u00e0 Toulouse (puis l’Atlantique). Les 240 km du canal ont \u00e9t\u00e9 achev\u00e9s en 15 ans (1666-81) par 12 000 ouvriers, avec 64 \u00e9cluses. Plus grande r\u00e9gion viticole du monde, le Languedoc-Roussillon remplit quelque deux milliards de bouteilles par an. Le sol rocheux, les collines escarp\u00e9es et le climat sec et ensoleill\u00e9 offrent des conditions id\u00e9ales pour les vignobles, un fait d’abord appr\u00e9ci\u00e9 par les anciens Grecs et Romains. C’est aussi la patrie du plus ancien mousseux du monde, la Blanquette de Limoux (invent\u00e9e au XVIe si\u00e8cle) et d’une gamme de vins naturellement doux comme le Banyuls et le Rivesaltes.<\/p>\n
Le vin bon march\u00e9 du Languedoc-Roussillon a \u00e9tanch\u00e9 la soif des masses pendant la r\u00e9volution industrielle, mais au cours des derni\u00e8res d\u00e9cennies, ses vignerons ont am\u00e9lior\u00e9 la qualit\u00e9. Aujourd’hui, c’est la r\u00e9gion viticole la plus excitante du monde, non seulement pour les 24 vins AOC, mais aussi pour sa myriade de vins de pays, o\u00f9 des r\u00e8gles plus souples permettent plus d’exp\u00e9rimentation. Les march\u00e9s du Languedoc-Roussillon regorgent d’excellents produits locaux : hu\u00eetres de Bouzigues, anchois de Collioure, olives, fruits de mer, canard et foie gras, b\u0153uf de Camargue, truffes d’Uz\u00e8s, fruits frais (C\u00e9ret en Roussillon est la capitale fran\u00e7aise de la cerise), agneau de la Loz\u00e8re, la charcuterie et les fromages de ch\u00e8vre des C\u00e9vennes et bien plus encore.<\/p>\n
La r\u00e9gion n’\u00e9tait pas traditionnellement connue pour ses restaurants, bien qu’une nouvelle g\u00e9n\u00e9ration de chefs avertis travaille dur pour changer cela. Languedoc-Roussillon is the part of the French Mediterranean with a charm all of its own. One of its great assets is the amount of exciting geography in a relatively small area. From the wetlands of the Petite Camargue and its white horses and black bulls to the rugged jumble of the C\u00f4te Vermeille by the Spanish border. Endless sandy beaches and flamingo-filled lagoons fill the space in between. Inland, vines, parasol pines and Mediterranean scrub dominate a dramatic hinterland, characterised by highlands of causses and garrigue, chestnut and oak forests, wild gorges and mountains \u2013 the C\u00e9vennes, Montagne Noire and the Pyrenees \u2013 all only an hour's drive from the coast.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A Brief History<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
The region thrived in Roman times, its main cities growing along the Italy-to-Spain Via Domitia: Montpellier, N\u00eemes, B\u00e9ziers and Narbonne. By the early Middle Ages, what was known as \"Languedoc\" (then much of southern France) was an independent nation, home to a sophisticated, tolerant civilisation, inspired by the Moorish culture of Al-Andaluz in nearby Spain. It was the time of the troubadours, who made the local language, Occitan the first secular literary language in Europe \u2013 so much as that even Dante toyed with the idea using it for The Divine Comedy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Disillusioned with the corruption of the medieval Church, many inhabitants of Languedoc adopted Catharism: a dualist take on Christianity, with some surprisingly modern ideas; women, for instance, had equal rights. In 1209, the Pope called a holy war known as the Albigensian Crusade against them that put an abrupt end to Languedoc's precocious brilliance \u2013 as well as its independence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Anything left of the Cathars?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
Castles mostly, starting with the one in Carcassonne. This impregnable citadel was the seat of the Viscount Raymond-Roger Trencavel, who offered the Cathars protection from the Crusaders \u2013 until Simon de Montfort, their ruthlessly efficient captain, tricked the young viscount into leaving his impregnable stronghold, then imprisoned and poisoned him to seize his title and lands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The walls and witch-hatted towers of the Cit\u00e9 of Carcassonne, restored in the 19th century, form a majestic fairy tale tiara over the Aude valley, today besieged by over a million visitors a year. Go early in the morning or out of season if you can. Visit the Ch\u00e2teau-Comtal and take a tour of the ramparts. Even after the capture and mass executions at Monts\u00e9gur in 1244, a few Cathars held out. South of Carcassonne, in the wilds of the Corbi\u00e8res, they took refuge in castles teetering on vertiginous pinnacles that have since fallen into splendid ruins. There are several to visit: the most spectacular are Qu\u00e9ribus and Peyrepetuse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Rumour has it that a few Cathars slipped away to Rennes-le-Ch\u00e2teau and hid a secret treasure, which was later uncovered by the village priest, the Abb\u00e9 Sauni\u00e8re. It's one theory behind the mystery that captivated Holy Blood, Holy Grail fans; check it out at the Domaine de l'Abb\u00e9 Sauni\u00e8re.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
City lights?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
Montpellier is the fastest-growing city in France. Home to a major university and a handsome 18th-century centre, Montpellier boasts the region's best nightlife, shopping, and some great attractions. First, an excellent art collection in the Mus\u00e9e Fabre. Next, the wholly 21st-century Mare Nostrum Aquarium. Third, the flora- and fauna-filled Serre Amazonienne. If you can afford to splash out, eat at the fabled Le Jardin des Sens, headquarters of twin master chefs Jacques and Laurent Pourcel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
N\u00eemes, the \"Rome of France\", is a gem, with a perfectly preserved Roman temple, the Maison Carr\u00e9e and the Ar\u00e8nes \u2013 a Roman amphitheatre in better nick than the Colosseum. The city's water was delivered by no less than a masterpiece of ancient engineering, the Pont du Gard, 16km north-east of town.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
To the west, B\u00e9ziers is the quintessential, non-twee Languedoc city. It makes a striking sight, piled under a huge Gothic cathedral that was built after the original burned in the infamous massacre of the Cathars (and everyone else) when the Papal legate allegedly ordered the Albigensian Crusaders: \"Kill them all; God will know His own.\"<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Further west, Narbonne was Languedoc's most important town into the Middle Ages; its centrepiece is the Gothic Cathedral and a fortified Episcopal Palace. The latter now houses excellent art and archaeology museums.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Perpignan is effectively the last city in France before the Spanish border, and has influences from both countries; the railway station has a monument to local Catalan hero Salvador Dali, who described la gare as \"the centre of the universe\".<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Something less busy?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
Start with classy little Uz\u00e8s, with its Pisa-style belltower, the Tour Fenestrelle, and unique ducal castle: Le Duch\u00e9 in the centre of town. Sommi\u00e8res, once residence of Lawrence Durrell, has a Roman bridge and lazy-boules-under-the-plane trees charms, while P\u00e9zenas, once capital of Languedoc, is full of handsome 17th-century buildings and memories of Moli\u00e8re, whose troupe performed here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
To the west, S\u00e8te is a fishing port laced with canals, home to the amusing Mus\u00e9e International des Arts Modestes and to a full calendar of summer festivals. Among the most popular are the joutes nautiques (nautical jousts), a sport unique to Languedoc. These clashes, propelled by rowers instead of horses, were invented by LouisV CIX's Crusaders while killing time at Aigues Mortes, a spectacular walled port now stranded high and dry in the Petite Camargue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
And the beaches?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
In the 1960s, Paris made Languedoc-Roussillon the Florida of France, to detour French holidaymakers (and their cash) from the Costa Brava. Of the new resorts, two are especially popular: the now-quaint, futuristic La Grande Motte near Montpellier; and Le Cap d'Agde, part of which is the biggest naturist resort in Europe. It lies near the old town of Agde. This community is known as Languedoc's \"Black Pearl\" for its basalt architecture; it also has gorgeous ancient Greek bronzes in the Mus\u00e9e de l'Eph\u00e8be, dedicated to underwater archaeology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In Roussillon, the white sandy beaches (and resorts of St-Cyprien-sur-Mer and Canet Plage) meet the beautiful C\u00f4te Vermeille, where the arty anchovy port of Collioure oozes charm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Can I work up a sweat?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
Oh yes. The Mediterranean Pyrenees are a winter and summer playground, perfect for trekking, kayaking, canyoning, caving, and rock climbing.
The d\u00e9partement of the Loz\u00e8re in northern Languedoc encompasses much of the beautiful Parc National des C\u00e9vennes. The park encompasses the 65km Gorges du Tarn and awe-inspiring karstic marvels, sculpted in the limestone: the Gorges de la Jonte, where vultures have been re-introduced; the Grotte de Dargilan, and an abyss, the Ab\u00eeme de Bramabiau.
If you've brought the children, don't miss clambering over the art installations at the Loz\u00e8re's answer to Disneyland Paris, the Vallon du Villaret in Bagnols les Bains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I'd rather just drift along<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
Try the Canal du Midi, which links the Mediterranean to Toulouse (then the Atlantic). The canal's 240km were completed in 15 years (1666-81) by 12,000 workers, who 64 locks. The railroads made it obsolete, but it is now among the region's prime attractions. You can extend the trip along the Canal du Rh\u00f4ne \u00e0 S\u00e8te, which meets the Rh\u00f4ne at Beaucaire.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
And the wine?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
The world's biggest wine region, Languedoc-Roussillon fills some two billion bottles a year. The rocky soil, rugged hills and dry, sunny climate provide perfect conditions for vineyards, a fact first appreciated by the ancient Greeks and Romans. It's also the home of the world's oldest bubbly, Blanquette de Limoux (invented in the 16th century) and a range of naturally sweet wines such as Banyuls and Rivesaltes.<\/p>\n
Languedoc-Roussillon's plonk slaked the thirst of the masses during the Industrial Revolution, but in recent decades, its vignerons have made improvements in the quality. Today it's the world's most exciting wine region, not only for the 24 AOC wines but its myriad vins de pays, where laxer rules allow more experimentation. An excellent place to learn about them is the Vin\u00e9cole (00 33 4 4 68 31 64 14) near Limoux, run by English Master of Wine Matthew Stubbs, who offers courses from speed tasting to classes for professionals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Bon app\u00e9tit - Flavours of the region<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
Languedoc-Roussillon's markets overflow with excellent local ingredients: Bouzigues oysters, Collioure anchovies, olives, seafood, duck and foie gras, beef from the Camargue, truffles from Uz\u00e8s, fresh fruit (C\u00e9ret in Roussillon is the cherry capital of France), lamb from the Loz\u00e8re, charcuterie and goat cheeses from the C\u00e9vennes and much more.
The region wasn't traditionally known for its restaurants, although a new generation of savvy chefs are working hard to change that. Some of the best work at the Ambassade and Octopus, both in B\u00e9ziers; La Maison de la Loz\u00e8re in Montpellier, Gilles Goujon at Fontjoncouse, Le Parc Franck Putelat in Carcassonne and the Auberge Saint-Paul in Villefranche-de-Conflent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
When to go<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
July and August are high season: the beaches are packed and Languedoc-Roussillon puts on a non-stop array of festivals and ferias. April to June and September to October have cooler temperatures, fewer crowds and lower prices, and are also the best times for walking. Montpellier stays lively all year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
And the best thing?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Dans les ann\u00e9es 1960, Paris a fait du Languedoc-Roussillon la Floride de la France, pour d\u00e9tourner les vacanciers fran\u00e7ais (et leur argent) de la Costa Brava.<\/p>\n
Parmi les nouvelles stations baln\u00e9aires, deux sont particuli\u00e8rement populaires : la d\u00e9sormais pittoresque et futuriste La Grande Motte pr\u00e8s de Montpellier ; et Le Cap d’Agde<\/a><\/span>, dont une partie est la plus grande station naturiste d’Europe. Il se trouve \u00e0 proximit\u00e9 de la vieille ville d’Agde. Le parc englobe les 65 km des Gorges du Tarn et des merveilles karstiques impressionnantes, sculpt\u00e9es dans le calcaire : les Gorges de la Jonte, o\u00f9 les vautours ont \u00e9t\u00e9 r\u00e9introduits ; la Grotte de Dargilan, et un gouffre, l’Ab\u00eeme de Bramabiau. Si vous avez amen\u00e9 les enfants, ne manquez pas de grimper sur les installations artistiques de la r\u00e9ponse de la Loz\u00e8re \u00e0 Disneyland Paris, le Vallon du Villaret \u00e0 Bagnols les Bains.<\/p>\n Essayez le Canal du Midi<\/a><\/span>, qui relie la M\u00e9diterran\u00e9e \u00e0 Toulouse (puis l’Atlantique). Les 240 km du canal ont \u00e9t\u00e9 achev\u00e9s en 15 ans (1666-81) par 12 000 ouvriers, avec 64 \u00e9cluses. Le sol rocheux, les collines escarp\u00e9es et le climat sec et ensoleill\u00e9 offrent des conditions id\u00e9ales pour les vignobles, un fait d’abord appr\u00e9ci\u00e9 par les anciens Grecs et Romains. C’est aussi la patrie du plus ancien mousseux du monde, la Blanquette de Limoux (invent\u00e9e au XVIe si\u00e8cle) et d’une gamme de vins naturellement doux comme le Banyuls et le Rivesaltes.<\/p>\n Le vin bon march\u00e9 du Languedoc-Roussillon a \u00e9tanch\u00e9 la soif des masses pendant la r\u00e9volution industrielle, mais au cours des derni\u00e8res d\u00e9cennies, ses vignerons ont am\u00e9lior\u00e9 la qualit\u00e9. Aujourd’hui, c’est la r\u00e9gion viticole la plus excitante du monde, non seulement pour les 24 vins AOC, mais aussi pour sa myriade de vins de pays, o\u00f9 des r\u00e8gles plus souples permettent plus d’exp\u00e9rimentation. By the early Middle Ages, what was known as \"Languedoc\" (then much of southern France) was an independent nation, home to a sophisticated, tolerant civilisation, inspired by the Moorish culture of Al-Andaluz in nearby Spain. It was the time of the troubadours, who made the local language, Occitan the first secular literary language in Europe \u2013 so much as that even Dante toyed with the idea using it for The Divine Comedy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Castles mostly, starting with the one in Carcassonne. This impregnable citadel was the seat of the Viscount Raymond-Roger Trencavel, who offered the Cathars protection from the Crusaders \u2013 until Simon de Montfort, their ruthlessly efficient captain, tricked the young viscount into leaving his impregnable stronghold, then imprisoned and poisoned him to seize his title and lands. The walls and witch-hatted towers of the Cit\u00e9 of Carcassonne, restored in the 19th century, form a majestic fairy tale tiara over the Aude valley, today besieged by over a million visitors a year. Go early in the morning or out of season if you can. Visit the Ch\u00e2teau-Comtal and take a tour of the ramparts. Even after the capture and mass executions at Monts\u00e9gur in 1244, a few Cathars held out. South of Carcassonne, in the wilds of the Corbi\u00e8res, they took refuge in castles teetering on vertiginous pinnacles that have since fallen into splendid ruins. There are several to visit: the most spectacular are Qu\u00e9ribus and Peyrepetuse. Montpellier is the fastest-growing city in France. Home to a major university and a handsome 18th-century centre, Montpellier boasts the region's best nightlife, shopping, and some great attractions. First, an excellent art collection in the Mus\u00e9e Fabre. Next, the wholly 21st-century Mare Nostrum Aquarium. Third, the flora- and fauna-filled Serre Amazonienne. If you can afford to splash out, eat at the fabled Le Jardin des Sens, headquarters of twin master chefs Jacques and Laurent Pourcel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Start with classy little Uz\u00e8s, with its Pisa-style belltower, the Tour Fenestrelle, and unique ducal castle: Le Duch\u00e9 in the centre of town. Sommi\u00e8res, once residence of Lawrence Durrell, has a Roman bridge and lazy-boules-under-the-plane trees charms, while P\u00e9zenas, once capital of Languedoc, is full of handsome 17th-century buildings and memories of Moli\u00e8re, whose troupe performed here. In the 1960s, Paris made Languedoc-Roussillon the Florida of France, to detour French holidaymakers (and their cash) from the Costa Brava. Of the new resorts, two are especially popular: the now-quaint, futuristic La Grande Motte near Montpellier; and Le Cap d'Agde, part of which is the biggest naturist resort in Europe. It lies near the old town of Agde. This community is known as Languedoc's \"Black Pearl\" for its basalt architecture; it also has gorgeous ancient Greek bronzes in the Mus\u00e9e de l'Eph\u00e8be, dedicated to underwater archaeology. Oh yes. The Mediterranean Pyrenees are a winter and summer playground, perfect for trekking, kayaking, canyoning, caving, and rock climbing. Try the Canal du Midi, which links the Mediterranean to Toulouse (then the Atlantic). The canal's 240km were completed in 15 years (1666-81) by 12,000 workers, who 64 locks. The railroads made it obsolete, but it is now among the region's prime attractions. You can extend the trip along the Canal du Rh\u00f4ne \u00e0 S\u00e8te, which meets the Rh\u00f4ne at Beaucaire. The world's biggest wine region, Languedoc-Roussillon fills some two billion bottles a year. The rocky soil, rugged hills and dry, sunny climate provide perfect conditions for vineyards, a fact first appreciated by the ancient Greeks and Romans. It's also the home of the world's oldest bubbly, Blanquette de Limoux (invented in the 16th century) and a range of naturally sweet wines such as Banyuls and Rivesaltes.<\/p>\n Languedoc-Roussillon's markets overflow with excellent local ingredients: Bouzigues oysters, Collioure anchovies, olives, seafood, duck and foie gras, beef from the Camargue, truffles from Uz\u00e8s, fresh fruit (C\u00e9ret in Roussillon is the cherry capital of France), lamb from the Loz\u00e8re, charcuterie and goat cheeses from the C\u00e9vennes and much more. July and August are high season: the beaches are packed and Languedoc-Roussillon puts on a non-stop array of festivals and ferias. April to June and September to October have cooler temperatures, fewer crowds and lower prices, and are also the best times for walking. Languedoc-Roussillon is the part of the French Mediterranean with a charm all of its own. One of its great assets is the amount of exciting geography in a relatively small area. From the wetlands of the Petite Camargue and its white horses and black bulls to the rugged jumble of the C\u00f4te Vermeille by the Spanish border. Endless sandy beaches and flamingo-filled lagoons fill the space in between. Inland, vines, parasol pines and Mediterranean scrub dominate a dramatic hinterland, characterised by highlands of causses and garrigue, chestnut and oak forests, wild gorges and mountains \u2013 the C\u00e9vennes, Montagne Noire and the Pyrenees \u2013 all only an hour's drive from the coast.<\/p>\n\n\n\nA Brief History<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
Disillusioned with the corruption of the medieval Church, many inhabitants of Languedoc adopted Catharism: a dualist take on Christianity, with some surprisingly modern ideas; women, for instance, had equal rights. In 1209, the Pope called a holy war known as the Albigensian Crusade against them that put an abrupt end to Languedoc's precocious brilliance \u2013 as well as its independence.<\/p>\n\n\n\nAnything left of the Cathars?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Rumour has it that a few Cathars slipped away to Rennes-le-Ch\u00e2teau and hid a secret treasure, which was later uncovered by the village priest, the Abb\u00e9 Sauni\u00e8re. It's one theory behind the mystery that captivated Holy Blood, Holy Grail fans; check it out at the Domaine de l'Abb\u00e9 Sauni\u00e8re.<\/p>\n\n\n\nCity lights?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
N\u00eemes, the \"Rome of France\", is a gem, with a perfectly preserved Roman temple, the Maison Carr\u00e9e and the Ar\u00e8nes \u2013 a Roman amphitheatre in better nick than the Colosseum. The city's water was delivered by no less than a masterpiece of ancient engineering, the Pont du Gard, 16km north-east of town.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
To the west, B\u00e9ziers is the quintessential, non-twee Languedoc city. It makes a striking sight, piled under a huge Gothic cathedral that was built after the original burned in the infamous massacre of the Cathars (and everyone else) when the Papal legate allegedly ordered the Albigensian Crusaders: \"Kill them all; God will know His own.\"<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Further west, Narbonne was Languedoc's most important town into the Middle Ages; its centrepiece is the Gothic Cathedral and a fortified Episcopal Palace. The latter now houses excellent art and archaeology museums.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Perpignan is effectively the last city in France before the Spanish border, and has influences from both countries; the railway station has a monument to local Catalan hero Salvador Dali, who described la gare as \"the centre of the universe\".<\/p>\n\n\n\nSomething less busy?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

To the west, S\u00e8te is a fishing port laced with canals, home to the amusing Mus\u00e9e International des Arts Modestes and to a full calendar of summer festivals. Among the most popular are the joutes nautiques (nautical jousts), a sport unique to Languedoc. These clashes, propelled by rowers instead of horses, were invented by LouisV CIX's Crusaders while killing time at Aigues Mortes, a spectacular walled port now stranded high and dry in the Petite Camargue.<\/p>\n\n\n\nAnd the beaches?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

In Roussillon, the white sandy beaches (and resorts of St-Cyprien-sur-Mer and Canet Plage) meet the beautiful C\u00f4te Vermeille, where the arty anchovy port of Collioure oozes charm.<\/p>\n\n\n\nCan I work up a sweat?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
The d\u00e9partement of the Loz\u00e8re in northern Languedoc encompasses much of the beautiful Parc National des C\u00e9vennes. The park encompasses the 65km Gorges du Tarn and awe-inspiring karstic marvels, sculpted in the limestone: the Gorges de la Jonte, where vultures have been re-introduced; the Grotte de Dargilan, and an abyss, the Ab\u00eeme de Bramabiau.
If you've brought the children, don't miss clambering over the art installations at the Loz\u00e8re's answer to Disneyland Paris, the Vallon du Villaret in Bagnols les Bains.<\/p>\n\n\n\nI'd rather just drift along<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Languedoc-Roussillon's plonk slaked the thirst of the masses during the Industrial Revolution, but in recent decades, its vignerons have made improvements in the quality. Today it's the world's most exciting wine region, not only for the 24 AOC wines but its myriad vins de pays, where laxer rules allow more experimentation.
