Fournir une route int\u00e9rieure s\u00fbre qui \u00e9vite le voyage perfide autour de la p\u00e9ninsule ib\u00e9rique avec ses temp\u00eates et ses pirates. Le manque d&#8217;argent et les difficult\u00e9s techniques se r\u00e9v\u00e9l\u00e8rent insurmontables jusqu&#8217;en 1662.<\/p>\n<p>Un brillant fonctionnaire du nom de Pierre-Paul Riquet \u00e9tait devenu obs\u00e9d\u00e9 par le projet. Il croyait avoir la solution. Il propose de creuser un canal entre S\u00e8te et Toulouse, via Bordeaux et jusqu&#8217;\u00e0 l&#8217;Atlantique. Des cargos sp\u00e9cialement con\u00e7us ont \u00e9t\u00e9 construits pour le canal et remorqu\u00e9s par des chevaux. Ceux-ci \u00e9taient capables de transporter des charges de 120 tonnes \u2013 bien plus que les charrettes voyageant par la route.<\/p>\n<p>\u00c0 tout moment, jusqu&#8217;\u00e0 250 cargos sillonnaient le canal, le trajet entre\u00a0S\u00e8te et Toulouse prenant environ une semaine. La cargaison \u00e9tait principalement compos\u00e9e de vin, de poisson s\u00e9ch\u00e9, de c\u00e9r\u00e9ales et de fruits. Les passagers, quant \u00e0 eux, \u00e9taient transport\u00e9s sur des bateaux tir\u00e9s par des chevaux appel\u00e9s voitures postales.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Le Canal du Midi \u00e0 v\u00e9lo<\/strong><\/h3>\n<h3><strong>Haute-Garonne d\u00e9partement Midi-Pyr\u00e9n\u00e9es<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Depuis l&#8217;\u00e9norme Port de l&#8217;Embouchure \u00e0 Toulouse, vous p\u00e9dalez sous le pont et sortez sur le chemin de halage du Canal du Midi. Suivent l&#8217;\u00e9cluse d&#8217;Ayguevives avec son moulin datant de 1831, puis par l&#8217;\u00e9cluse de Sanglier jusqu&#8217;\u00e0 l&#8217;\u00e9cluse de Negra. C&#8217;\u00e9tait un \u00ab\u00a0din\u00e9e\u00a0\u00bb, une pause d\u00e9jeuner, pour les passagers du canal. Un petit village a \u00e9t\u00e9 construit ici pour accueillir ces voyageurs; h\u00f4tels, restaurants et \u00e9curies, m\u00eame une \u00e9glise bien conserv\u00e9e.<\/p>\n<p>Il y a trois villages le long de ce tron\u00e7on, deux beaux et un excentrique. Ce sont Montesquieu-Lauragais, avec ses deux ch\u00e2teaux, et Villenouvelle et son superbe clocher. Sur l&#8217;autre rive, Saint Rome est l&#8217;endroit o\u00f9 un architecte excentrique a construit un village dans un assortiment de styles : mauresque, flamand, n\u00e9o-byzantin, mais aussi baroque et Tudor pour faire bonne mesure.<\/p>\n<p>C&#8217;est ensuite le retour au canal et \u00e0 la normalit\u00e9, en traversant le magnifique aqueduc de Lers, con\u00e7u par Jean-Polycarpe Magu\u00e8s, qui \u00e9tait l&#8217;ing\u00e9nieur charg\u00e9 de superviser la construction du canal lui-m\u00eame.<\/p>\n<p>Ensuite, direction le \u00ab\u00a0sommet\u00a0\u00bb, ainsi appel\u00e9 parce qu&#8217;il s&#8217;agit de la partie la plus \u00e9lev\u00e9e du canal. Le Seuil de Naurouze est l&#8217;endroit o\u00f9 l&#8217;alimentation en eau du canal est contr\u00f4l\u00e9e par une s\u00e9rie d&#8217;\u00e9cluses. Ici, c&#8217;est \u00e0 la fois la beaut\u00e9 et l&#8217;histoire. Il y a un Arboretum, une avenue spectaculaire bord\u00e9e de 62 platanes menant \u00e0 un obelsik hommage \u00e0 Paul Riquet. Le terrain plus vallonn\u00e9 est perceptible et les \u00e9cluses plus fr\u00e9quentes alors que le canal entame sa douce descente vers la M\u00e9diterran\u00e9e.<\/p>\n<p>L&#8217;un des principaux ports du canal est Castelnaudary, une ville pittoresque c\u00e9l\u00e8bre pour son cassoulet. C&#8217;est maintenant un lent m\u00e9andre dans ce paysage paisible, de jolis villages qui paressent sous un chaud soleil.<\/p>\n<p>Le prochain arr\u00eat est la ville fortifi\u00e9e de\u00a0Carcassonne, class\u00e9e au patrimoine mondial de l&#8217;UNESCO, \u00e0 ne pas manquer, et ce n&#8217;est qu&#8217;un bref d\u00e9tour depuis la Bastide Saint-Louis, la ville travers\u00e9e par le canal.<\/p>\n<p>De l\u00e0, le canal &#8211; lui-m\u00eame class\u00e9 au patrimoine mondial &#8211; suit de pr\u00e8s le cours de la rivi\u00e8re Aude \u00e0 travers le doux paysage vallonn\u00e9 de la vall\u00e9e de l&#8217;Aude. Cette partie du canal est bord\u00e9e d&#8217;anciens villages, leurs \u00e9glises gothiques et m\u00e9di\u00e9vales, ch\u00e2teaux et remparts tous d&#8217;int\u00e9r\u00eat.<\/p>\n<p>Il y a aussi de jolies m\u00e8ches, bien entretenues par l&#8217;\u00e9clusier ; certains, comme Puicheric et Jouarres, proposent des caf\u00e9s et des terroirs \u00e0 vendre. De l\u00e0, c&#8217;est vers le port autrefois important de Homps, aujourd&#8217;hui un grand centre pour les bateaux de plaisance, avec de nombreux restaurants et beaucoup d&#8217;agitation dans le port lui-m\u00eame.<\/p>\n<p>Plus bas se trouve le premier pont-canal construit en Europe, l&#8217;aqueduc du R\u00e9pudre, qui franchit la rivi\u00e8re R\u00e9pudre. These were capable of carrying loads of 120 tonnes \u2013 much more than carts travelling by road.\n\nAt any time there were as many as 250 freighters plying the canal, the journey between\u00a0S\u00e8te and Toulouse taking about a week. The cargo was mainly wine, dried fish, cereals and fruit. Passengers, meanwhile, were carried on horse-drawn boats called mail carriages.\n<h3><strong>Cycling the Canal du Midi<\/strong><\/h3>\n<h6>Haute-Garonne department of the Midi-Pyrenees<\/h6>\nFrom the enormous Port de l'Embouchure in Toulouse, you cycle under the bridge and out on to the Canal du Midi's towpath. You then pass the urbanisation of Toulouse and the railway station, Gare Matabiau, a statue of Riquet farewelling you as you leave.\n\n<img class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-80985\" src=\"https:\/\/lacalade.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/Toulouse-1.png\" alt=\"Cycling Toulouse\" width=\"1200\" height=\"628\" \/>\n\nThe canal weaves through the city suburbs and out into the fertile countryside until it reaches Escalqueuns. Following is Ayguevives Lock with its mill dating from 1831, then on through Sanglier Lock to Negra Lock. This was a \u2018dinee\u2019, a lunch stop, for passengers on the canal. A small village was built here to cater for those travellers; hotels, restaurants and stables, even a well preserved church.\n\nThere are three villages along this stretch, two beautiful and one eccentric. They are Montesquieu-Lauragais, with its two castles, and Villenouvelle and its superb bell-tower. On the other bank, Saint Rome is where an eccentric architect built a village in an assortment of styles: Moorish, Flemish, Neo-Byzantine, and also Baroque and Tudor for good measure.\n\nIt's then back to the canal and normality, crossing the beautiful Lers Aqueduct, designed by Jean-Polycarpe Magu\u00e8s, who was the engineer responsible for overseeing the construction of the canal itself.\n\nThen it's on to the \u2018summit\u2019, so called because it is the highest part of the canal. The Seuil de Naurouze is where the supply of water to the canal is controlled by a series of sluices. Here is both beauty and history. There's an Arboretum, a spectacular avenue lined with 62 plane trees leading to an obelsik tributed to Paul Riquet. It is the place where a Napoleonic general surrendered to Wellington after the Battle of Toulouse and where an ancient Cathar fortress still stands.\n<h6><img class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-80986\" src=\"https:\/\/lacalade.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/Seuil-de-Naurouze-1.png\" alt=\"Seuil de Naurouze\" width=\"1200\" height=\"628\" \/><\/h6>\n<h6>Aude department of Languedoc-Roussillon<\/h6>\nAfter Seuil is Mediterranean Lock; now you stop being an \u2018upstreamer\u2019 and become a \u2018downstreamer\u2019, the water now running towards the Mediterranean. The hillier terrain is noticeable and the locks more frequent as the canal begins its gentle descent to the Mediterranean.\n\nOne of the major ports on the canal is Castelnaudary, a picturesque town famous for its cassoulet. It\u2019s now a slow meander through this peaceful landscape, pretty villages lazing under a warm sun.\n\nThe next stop is the UNESCO-listed fortified city of\u00a0Carcassonne - a must-see, and it's just a brief detour from the Bastide Saint-Louis, the town through which the canal actually passes.\n\nFrom here, the canal \u2013 itself World Heritage Listed \u2013 closely follows the course of the River Aude through the gentle, hilly landscape of the Aude valley. This part of the canal is lined with ancient villages, their gothic and medieval churches, castles and ramparts all of interest.\n\nThere are some attractive locks, too, well tended by the \u2018eclusier\u2019, the lockkeeper; some, like Puicheric and Jouarres, provide cafes and \u2018produits terroir\u2019 (local produce) for sale. There is also Ecluse de l'Aguille, where the lockkeeper has turned his lock into a fascinating gallery of sculptures in metal and wood, also carving figures and faces in surrounding trees.\n\n<img class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-80987\" src=\"https:\/\/lacalade.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/Ecluse-1.png\" alt=\"Ecluse d'Aiguille\" width=\"1200\" height=\"628\" \/>\n\n&nbsp;\n\nThe small port of La Redorte was a \u2018dinee\u2019 for early travellers, and the tradition continues today with a quayside restaurant. From here it's on to the once major port of Homps, now a large centre for pleasure boats, with plenty of restaurants, and lots of bustle in the port itself.\n\nFarther down is the first canal bridge to be built in Europe, the\u00a0R\u00e9pudre Aqueduct, which crosses the river R\u00e9pudre. A few kilometres on is the delightful port of La Somail, which seems to look very much like it would have 300 years ago when it was an overnight stop.\n\nAs you near B\u00e9ziers, the canal weaves its way somewhat erratically through what was difficult countryside to cut a canal. The number of curves increases, sharp bends wend their way, and aqueducts abound \u2013 seven in total between Argeliers and Capestang. Other great feats of engineering are here, too: the first canal tunnel at Malpas and the Fons\u00e9rannes ladder, a succession of 8 locks, rising over 21 metres in the space of 300 metres.\n\n<img class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-80947\" src=\"https:\/\/lacalade.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/blog-lock.png\" alt=\"locks on the canal du midi\" width=\"1200\" height=\"628\" \/>\n\n&nbsp;\n\nB\u00e9ziers signals the last leg of the journey. Between here and the Mediterranean are the towns of Villeneuve-L\u00e8s-B\u00e9ziers, and the picturesque Agde, founded 2500 years ago by the Phoenicians and today an architectural treasure trove. It is after Agde that you can smell the sea.
